The Garmin Edge 500 is the newest addition to Garmins cycling computer range and are designed for riders who like to have full data at their fingertips bringing most of the grunt from the 705 and 705 units into a much more stylish slimline unit.
In order to make this size shrinking possible Garmin have removed the mapping functions that were a key aspect in the 605 and 705s. This also makes the price a LOT cheaper and takes the weight down to just 60grams. Battery life also gets a boost with a theoretical max run time of 18 hours.
The Edge 500 will lock onto satellites a lot quicker and the display is clearer and easier to use. As mentioned before there is no mapping facility built in but the Garmin Edge 500 will record your route for download onto Garmin Connect. It also has the bonus of being able to show vertical speed, temperature and a more accurately calculated calories expended.

A few notes on using your Garmin Edge 500 Successfully

On the whole the battery life is a bit like that of today's smart phones, ie it gets used heavily and it goes down quicker than you'd hope. I mean no one hopes their computer battery life won't ever go down but you know what I mean. You'll probably want to charge the unit up every 250 miles or so to make sure it's got plenty of juice in the tank although this will depend on how fast you ride obviously. It's pretty simple to charge as it works off of a USB charger, although various users have reported more success using the official Garmin USB cable that the Edge 500 unit comes shipped with rather than a cheaper 3rd party one which can sometimes give problems when doing a data transfer back to your home computer for data analysis later on.

Everyone is amazed by the Edge 500's small size and how every bit of it is perfectly functional with no unnecessary elements to it at all. Those of you with more than one bike will love how it comes shipped with two handlebar mounts so you can easily swap it between your machines.
